ah.
Was going to title this Lolling Stones, but that’s just irresponsible.
Anyway, I love this video, and through it found this post that hit the Rolling Stone website last year.
Snoop Dogg Goes Bollywood with “Singh Is King” Theme
7/28/08, 10:48 am EST
Having already conquered most every facet of media here in the States, Snoop Dogg is setting his sights on India. The Doggfather, also known as the self-described “America’s First Bollywood Superstar,” will perform the theme for the upcoming Bollywood film Singh Is King, as evidenced by the clip above. The film stars Akshay Kumar, billed as “India’s Biggest Movie Star.” The behind-the-scenes video is pretty much a minute of watching Snoop’s posse overseeing Snoop as he has a turban wrapped around his head before finally appearing in full genie mode next to Kumar. The comedic value of Snoop Goes Bollywood was off the charts but it’ll still be tough to top “Sensual Seduction.”

Singh | 7/30/2008, 9:43 pm EST
hes dressed as a sardar (male from sikh religion) not a genie. u should always make sure that u the stuff that you’re writing is accurate and not some half-ass job.
Allen | 7/31/2008, 3:34 am EST
Whoever suggested that he looks like a genie should reconsider being a journalist. The turban or dastaar is worn by all initiated Sikhs. They are a very brave and honorable people. Most in the West see them as taxi drivers but Sikhs have fought oppression for hundred of years in the land that is now occupied by Pakistan and India. The Sikhs used to ride on horseback from the jungles of northern India to save Hindu slaves (mostly women and children) from the caravans of Afghan and Persian invaders. The Mughals (the ruling Muslim monarchy) put a price on the heads of Singhs (male Sikhs) forcing them to go underground and live in the jungles. If it were not for Sikhs, Hinduism’s numbers would be considerably less today. They are 2% of India’s population but they composed more than 80% of those who were died for Indian indpendence from the British. I know this because I am a professor in Sikh studies at Hofstra.
It is great that these people are finally getting some recognition in the West. I would love to see a feature film made about them–their history is VERY rich with accounts of battlefield barvery, honor and sacrifice.

Im guessing it was some american journalist who wrote the article, as you guys are so ignorant! He is dressed as a sadaar not a genie, this is the traditional dress code for male sikhs.
The myth of the genie is that they are trapped in their lamp and salves to thir masters, to say that the two are alike shows real ignorance. Get the facts right before you write this b-s.

I’m very disappointed that Rolling Stone has lived up to the steriotype that Americans don’t know anything about other cultures. You should take time to learn about what you are seeing before you open your mouth and make some racist comment because of your ignorance. Not only is Snoop not dressed as a genie, but his collaboration with Bollywood is not comical – and to imply that it is comical is insulting to both Snoop and to the Indian film industry. If it had been Snoop Dogg collaborating with a European film maker, would people have considered it comical? India and Indian culture is not just funny little caricatures from Disney movies and the Simpsons. America is too complacent about racism towards South Asians, and too many people have accepted the racist steriotypes as truths about South Asian culture because they see those steriotypes so frequently in American popular culture. One of the world’s greatest rappers collaborating with the world’s largest film industry is not comical, it is a logical merger that is long overdue. Snoop Dogg wore Indian attire NOT because he wanted to be some caricature, but because he wanted to show respect and appreciation for Indian culture. He should be commended both for his global mindset and for the business and artistic foresight displayed by this collaboration.

I’m with SK and I could not have said it better myself! I’m not sure how Daniel Kreps or the editing staff could have even thought that his comments were acceptable. The ignorance displayed here is an insult and a disappointment.
Kirthy | 8/1/2008, 11:10 am EST
I am really offended by Snoop Dogg thinking that he can just be cool by donning a turban as a sardar.
He is not a positive role model of a disciplined sikh in fact he’s the exact opposite. This is just one big media made stunt that I think in the future will come out for what it really is and that is massively uncool!
Neha | 8/1/2008, 2:49 pm EST
It’s completely offensive and ignorant to write that Snoop is dressed like a Genie. A journalist myself, I’m very disappointed in this writer and Rolling Stone magazine for publishing things without even so much as a basic fact-check.
Sikhs have had a severe “image problem” ever since 9/11, specifically because of inaccurate and offensive media reports. Welcome to the bandwagon, Rolling Stone.
sonny | 8/1/2008, 3:36 pm EST
To reiterate what several readers have correctly stated, it is totally offensive and perpetuates a whole lot of racism to equate a turban with a genie. For Sikhs, the turban is a mandated article of faith that is at the core of our identity as a people. It demonstrates our commitment to our faith and our commitment to social justice. To make a mockery of a turban like this is not funny–it’s an attack on an entire community.
Roo | 8/4/2008, 8:34 pm EST
Come on, will you all just lay off Snoop Dogg for a minute?
He’s trying to involve himself in Bollywood, and it probably wasn’t his own plan to dress that way.
If anything, get mad at the director(s)/producer(s) of Singh is Kingg

Poor Journalism | 8/17/2008, 8:24 am EST
Rolling Stone = Poor Journalism. Please do a little research and understand what you’re talking about before you consider your self a Journalist, Daniel Kreps. This article makes unacceptable & erroneous statements that borderline racism, they show extreme cultural ignorance. Mr. Kreps should be fired or resign! – Real American Journalist
Some Indian Guy | 8/23/2008, 10:48 pm EST
Not bad, we indian people are finally getting some attention in the west. Stating that Snoop “appearing in Genie mode” is just plain ignorant however we should not hurl insults at the person reporting this. Also for Allen, you state that if it were not for sikhs, the numbers of hinduism would be considerably less today, well where do you think the sikhs came from? Mars? But you are a professor in Sikh studies, you already knew that. Next you are gonna say that only sikh people have Singh as their last name.
Yo Maan | 8/27/2008, 8:40 pm EST
I agree that, calling snoop Genie, with turban on his head is plain ignorant. Also I agree with Allen that sikhs did save lot of Hindus during Mughal regime. The nineth prophet of sikhs ( Shri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji) gave his life to save Hindus and that why he is called “Hind Di Chadar”. And the most ridiculous 12′Clock joke about sikhs, people really don’t know the true meaning about that and pulling that joke on sikhs is also ignorant. I do agree with “some indian guy” that Sikhism came from Hinduism, but thats past. When Northern hindus were converted forcefully to islam, nobody (Even there own religious leaders or Kings) came forward to help them, but the Sikh guru.
Yo Maan | 8/27/2008, 8:50 pm EST
And beside all rude and good comments. Ya’ll have admit that this video is dope. This song is playing in clubs and this is all because of Snoop D-O-G-G.

So I am guessing since they mentioned “off topic comments will be deleted” that they monitor this article. How about monitoring what YOUR people write first. I am a big fan of rolling stone but this disappoints me. First, mocking Snoop Dogg as a “Genie”?!? Seriously? Did you write this article two minutes before it was due because it certainly lacks research. Second, to me, it seems that this article is somehow judging this collaboration in a negative way. I agree that Snoop Dogg may have not been the best person to collobarate with but I admire him for his interest in the world unlike most self absorbed celebrities who perform solely to sell their music. It is about time we came out of our little shells and start mingling with the world. Instead of all American artists (more recently there had been numerous European artists too) who sing about stupid love songs top the chart, I would hope that artists explore music of other worlds. We shouldn’t be restricted as a society to listen to only what we are used to hearing. We should expand our horizons to include what the world listens to. Music is just that- Music. You can’t no more appreciate American music as you can Indian music, and for that fact music of the world. We can’t fully understand what music is until we hear it all: from all parts of world, from all people to all languages.
